21 Ways to Make Life More Romantic

The word romance has always stirred rebellion in my heart. So much so, I penned an impassioned essay around the etymology of it in college. If there is one gem of knowledge I could magically instill into your mind right now about the seven little letters, it’s this: romance is a lifestyle.

It’s not roses from the florist and candlelit dinners. It’s not diamond rings from Tiffany’s (unless we’re talking Sweet Home Alabama style, because well-played, politician Andrew). It’s not dinner at a fancy restaurant. It’s not a $2,500 designer handbag gift…and it’s not reserved for relationships alone.

It’s planting an evergreen tree in the mountains and visiting it every year as your family grows, observing it bravely inch closer to the stars every passing winter. It’s a dramatic emerald surrounded by imperfect diamonds sourced from antique English tiaras circa 1800s, because your heart is regal. It’s skipping the restaurant and making one of your grandmothers recipes as a celebration of tradition. It’s ditching travel guides and exploring the backroads of Europe by car, feeling your pulse quicken at every cliffside turn.

Romance is a way of living. It’s a choice to be “extra” from your morning skincare routine to lavender oil you diffuse into the bedroom air because its aroma transports you to lavender fields in Provence. It’s intentional. It’s selective. It’s a fierce abandonment of the standardized meaning of romance we’re told to expect. It’s a self-created lifestyle based on exploring every moment slowly, deeply and intentionally.

This year on KG.com is all about that celebrating the art of romance. Living life cinematically and awe-inspiring is within everyone’s reach, and I’ll show you how. Here are 21 small but grand ways to make your life more romantic in 2019.

  1. Ensure the rooms you spend the most time in always have fresh blooms. Less than $10 a week from Trader Joes. No excuses.
  2. Celebrate your body and its abilities. Sweat in a way that serves your body and mind.
  3. Wear silk dresses as often as possible.
  4. Learn how to flirt (heavily) in a new language.
  5. Give priority to your art, and if you don’t have one…find one immediately. Whether cooking or gardening, we are all artists meant to give away a gift.
  6. Wear lingerie (for you) – complete lingerie guide hitting KG.com on Valentine’s Day.
  7. Find a signature shade of lipstick that makes you feel Hollywood. Don’t leave the house without it on your lips.
  8. Invest in french skincare, because it’s the best.
  9. Incorporate regular social media detoxes in your life, even if your career is based on it (raises hand).
  10. Always say “yes” and never “yeah” or any other variation of agreement – you just made yourself a touch more old worldly.
  11. If don’t have elaborate spa time on Sundays (whether a DIY routine or the favorite spot in your city), start it this weekend.
  12. Eat croissants…but only if you also marvel at the hundreds of layers of labor, love and art that went into creating them. Make eating an art, never a rushed process or emotional response.
  13. Throw away everything in your closet that doesn’t make you feel like Amal Clooney walking into a courtroom..
  14. Learn the key differences between red wine, and endeavor to one day to identify the wine’s origin based on taste.
  15. Never make New Year resolutions without making plans to travel somewhere new.
  16. Write and send thank you cards. Religiously.
  17. Laughter is the best medicine; become addicted to the sound and time spent with those who make you positively ache from it.
  18. Don’t go to bed without thinking of 10 ways the day was a miracle.
  19. Celebrate every single occasion and holiday grandly…and certainly overdress for it.
  20. Incorporate renting vintage convertibles into every vacation.
  21. Don’t forget the classics when picking a film on movie night.
  22. BONUS: Stay atop world politics (not just those of your own country) and have strong opinions, but express them with action over contributing to divisive chatter. Make the changes you wish to see in the world through action, philanthropy and volunteer opportunities abroad.

  • “One of my favorite things about female writers, about writers in general, about people who take what’s happened to them and they process it and they put it out into the world...is if you write, you can turn your lessons into your legacy.” -Taylor Swift. Her albums always, without fail, paint a musical narrative to complement whatever stage I’m personally and professionally journeying through. Can’t wait for my window seat airplane hours on Friday, listening to her new stories which will inevitably be the soundtrack to so many romantic, cinematic, modern jetsetter moments in Europe this summer. The life of a writer is the only life for me. xx 💋
  • Coffee date in the Italian Riviera, anyone? Every day in Italy starts with finding the perfect cappuccino. Three insider rules for Italy visitors to find that perfect frothy dream: 1️⃣ Don‘t be confused by the word “bar” (this is an Italian café and the center of social life for locals) 2️⃣ Venture away from the city center to find bars where the locals go; you should always pay less than €2 for a cappuccino. Tourist hotspots charge up to €7 and often a far cry from true Italian coffee culture 3️⃣ Do order a cornetto to go with your coffee; one must do as the Italians do 🥐☕️ 🇮🇹
  • With a summer in Italy around the corner, I’m quickly adapting to CPSR diet: cappuccino, pasta, spritz, repeat. May can’t come soon enough. Stay tuned to the blog this week for a guide to one of Italy’s most coveted destinations, my Nonna’s gnocchi recipe, weekend reads and our big wedding destination reveal (+ a little official change to our addresses in the world). #ModernJetsetter 💋
  • There is no destination in the world sweeter than the one I experienced today: next to my little brother’s side when he found out he’s having a little baby boy - in the most country way ever. Thank you Kelsey for loving my brother the way you do, being an instant sister and for already being the most incredible mama to our Kipton. We can’t wait to spoil that boy with our love (and plenty of storytime with aunty in between duck hunting season). I love you three with all of my heart xx
  • Charleston is a perfect confluence of elegant southern tradition and European influence, especially when it comes to the food scene. Every time I discover a perfect charcuterie board or Aperol Spritz (far too often) it reminds me how short that Atlantic bridge between the USA and Europe is. During the next chapter of Modern Jetsetter, home time will be spent discovering the creme-de-la-creme of American living, and the million cultural pieces, flavors and patterns that make up our gorgeous presentation 🍷💋(food scene spotted st @goatsheepcow - one of my favorite Charleston restaurants)
